Let's talk about Titanium Dab Nails… Titanium Dab Nails are a classic and classy style of dabbing nails. Originally, titanium nails were the preferred vehicle for consuming your dabs. For many years titanium was preferred over everything else for several different reasons. With the rise in popularity and advancements made with dabbing, titanium nails have become less popular than their Quartz counterparts. However, this isn't for lack of functionality or quality, and you are starting to see more and more dabbers going for the Ti nail.
Why Should You Choose Titanium Dab Nails?
That is because Titanium can withstand the very high temperatures required when heating your dab nail. Another massive benefit of a titanium dab nail is its durability. Titanium is an extremely strong metal that can withstand MUCH more abuse than a Quartz or Glass nail. You always want to ensure that you are using quality titanium and that all of the titanium nails from Honeybee Herb are made using Grade 2 Titanium. Grade 2 Titanium is the same grade of titanium used commonly in the medical and food industry.
The Parts of a Traditional Post Style Titanium Dab Nail
The Skillet- This is where you heat and place your product once you have let the nail cool to an appropriate temperature.
Heat Spacer - The Heat Spacer is the section located right below the skillet and usually has rings that help dissipate the heat coming from the skillet. This is beneficial because you want minimal heat exposure on any parts of your Bongs.
The Dome - Some titanium nails will feature a moveable attached dome that will act as a carb cap when placed over the skillet while in use. This is a nice addition because a cap will ensure proper vaporization and carburation of the air in the nail, but it is very hard to misplace by being attached.
Connection Joint - This piece connects to your rig or water pipe. Make sure to check for both the size millimeter of your rigs joint and check to see if it is a male or female connection. When selecting your nail, you will want to choose one that matches in millimeter size in diameter and is the opposite sexed connection joint to ensure a proper pairing of water pipe and banger.
Male and Female Adapter - *Not all titanium nails have this feature* Some Titanium Nails for Dabs, such as the Titanium 6 in 1 Skillet Dab Nail, are fashioned in a way that they can fit multiple size joints in both male and female. The joint attachment part of the 6-in-1 nail has 3 different levels that cascade out from 10mm to 18mm. This piece can be unscrewed from the skillet and flipped, Having the same cascading levels but will now fit the opposite-sexed joint. This enables the nail to be used with virtually any rig with either a male or female joint. Titanium nails can be used with most carb caps that have a larger diameter than the dish. All of the titanium nails in the Honeybee Herb line-up DO have this feature, making them adaptable to 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm joint attachments in both males and females.
Titanium Bangers and Sidecars
Have you ever seen a Titanium Banger? While still a bit of an older design, the titanium bucket is not the type of banger that you normally see in a dab rig. These nails look almost identical to and function just the same as a quartz banger bucket, with the only difference being that they have been constructed from Grade 2 Titanium. A carb cap and dab pearls can be a great combination with a Titanium banger. While a carb cap is recommended with a 6-in-1 style titanium nail for dabbing, pearls or other dab inserts will not be able to be used with them. This blends the two worlds of titanium and bucket-style bangers and is attracting more and more dabbers to them.
Parts of a Titanium Banger or Sidecar
The parts of a titanium banger or sidecar are exactly the same as one made from quartz. The Bucket - The bucket is heated with a butane torch, cooled appropriately, and then the product is placed into the bucket to be vaporized.
The Neck - The neck is the part that connects the bucket to the joint
Joint - The joints on most titanium bangers and ALL of the titanium bangers in the Honeybee Herb line-up universally fit 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm joints. Some will also be able to interchange between male and female connections as well. For example, The Titanium 4 in 1 Sidecar Hybrid will fit a 10mm, 14mm, or 18mm joint on a male or female connection. In contrast, The Titanium 6 in 1 Original will fit 10mm, 14mm, and 18mm joints and is reversible to fit onto a male or female connection.
How Do I Season My Dab Nail?
Seasoning a dab nail is a process that is recommended when dabbing off of any titanium dab nail. This is achieved in one of two ways. The first is heating, allowing it to cool slightly, and placing your essential oils or other products onto the nail's surface. Allow this oil to burn off and repeat a couple of times. The second way is to use water. Use a pair of pliers to hold the nail to avoid contact while heating until red hot. Then, carefully dunk the hot nail into cold water and repeat the same process several more times. Seasoning your Titanium Nail for dabbing will help remove any residual oils, lubricants, or impurities from the factory machining of the titanium and will also help seal the surface. This will help ensure that you get the best temp off your titanium nail. Saved reclaimed material from cleaning your rigs is the cheapest and least wasteful way of seasoning your Ti nails.
How Do I Heat My Titanium Dab Nail?
The recommended heating method for a titanium dab nail is a butane torch. Used basically since the beginning of modern dabbing, the butane torch has been the preferred method of heating a dab nail. The combination of a butane torch and a titanium nail can be very nostalgic to someone with used one in the past. Heating is accomplished in the same way you would heat a quartz banger. In the past and before there was more widespread understanding of dabbing, there was a lot of confusion on when to place your product into the titanium nail to begin taking your dab. Many people would heat it until glowing red hot and immediately place their dab onto the extremely hot surface. This is an extremely harsh and what many would consider the improper way to take a dab. When doing this, you are no longer vaporizing your material but are combusting it. This leads to much harder hits and will usually cause the dabber to cough a lot, as the smoke being inhaled is still at a high temperature. For this reason, many users have turned away from dabbing on a titanium nail. We now have a much better understanding of how to properly heat and cool your nail. This ensures vaporization and is less harsh. Lower temperatures will also preserve the terpenes or flavors/aromas of your product which is something we can all agree on being one of the best parts about dabbing. A heating time of one minute or less and a cooling time of about 45 seconds should be around the appropriate time for a correct temperature, but nails can vary, and you should be able to get a good feel for it after the first couple of times.
How Do I Clean My Titanium Dab Nail?
Cleaning your titanium dab nail is a bit different than cleaning a quartz bucket. Some dabbers never clean their titanium nails as they believe that the nail is seasoned to their liking and do not want to remove and have to reseason their nail. Using the heat from your torch will remove and burn off most of the residual material, furthering the reason some dabbers choose not to clean their titanium nail. Another method of cleaning is using isopropyl alcohol.
You can use this in one of three ways; You can place your unheated titanium nail into a container of isopropyl alcohol and let soak for 10 - 15 minutes, or Use a cotton swab, paper towel, or cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol to wipe the nail clean. A third and final way of cleaning your titanium dab nail is with water. Heat your nail as usual, then using pliers or tongs to avoid coming into contact with the hot nail, place it into a container of room temperature water. Heat and repeat a couple more times.
